Malawi 2010

The volunteer visit took place between 23rd Oct and 3rd November. 17 volunteers travelled and were accompanied by Paula & Seamus.

They carried out repairs to St. Josephs Hospital near Mikolongwe, repaired the IT system for the hospital, painted and equipped a local kindergarten and delivered the HIV Sports programme to 700 pupils and trained people to continue the programme into the future.

However, on their way from the airport, they came accross a A Strange TAIL!!!

On our way from the airport in Lilongwe to our base in LImbe ( a 6 hour journey by road) we stopped to introduce the volunteers to the delights of African Sausage.
In some areas of Malawi the people hunt, capture and then cook mice. It is regarded as a delicacy and frequently the cooked mice are sold on sticks similar to a kebab here at home. The pictures below display the shock, horror and revulsion of the group as our Project Manager in Malawi, Winston, buys the mice from the local children and the absolute horror ( myself included ) as our bus driver Aron eats one of the mice. I'm certain many a person will hear of this in the telling of the tales of Malawi by the volunteers. These pictures are just to verify the truth of the tale ( not tail) and assure doubting people that the voulnteers were not as yet out in the sun for too long.
